Lecrae Wins Grammy For Best Gospel Album

Lecrae Wins Grammy

After many years creating and inspiring believers around the world with his hip-hop albums about his love of Jesus – Lecrae has officially been recognised by the secular music industry by winning the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album with his 2012 album Gravity.

When asked by MTV “Who are Lecare fans?” He answered.. “The Lecrae fans are like everyday people. Some of them are hip-hop fans, some of them are fans of responsibility and honesty…obviously some of them are people who embrace their faith. And that’s really who resonates with my music. It’s just honest, real hip-hop.”

Gravity was released on September 4, 2012 to critical acclaim. Upon its release, Gravity debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, with 72,000 units sold. The album also debuted at No. 1 on the Christian, Gospel, Independent, and Rap Album charts, No. 3 on the Digital Albums chart. After the iTunes deluxe version of the album hit No. 1  and the regular version at number No. 2 on iTunes, Time Magazine wrote an article about Lecrae and his success with the album.

“I don’t know if the sales surprised me as much as they encouraged me to keep going,” he said. “I know that my people rock with me. It’s more than just good music. It’s good music, but it’s honest music. It’s music that’s transparent and people relate to that, so it encouraged me to keep going.”

Can you be Christian and rap at the same time?

Lecrae answers this question in his interview on PBS and tells us more about the culture he grew up in before he gave his life to the Lord at 19.
